What It Is: Private Sleep Analysis from Wearable Data
A private sleep analysis system that turns nightly wearable data into something you can actually learn from. Your Apple Watch, Oura ring, or Garmin already records sleep stages, heart rate, HRV, and blood oxygen while you sleep. But the data sits in a phone app, usually reduced to a single score you glance at and forget. This system pulls that data onto your hardware, stores it in a real database, and runs analysis that a phone app can't: longitudinal trends across months, bedtime consistency patterns, cumulative sleep debt, overnight vital sign monitoring, and cross-metric correlations with exercise, fasting, and medication timing. The difference from a wearable's built-in app isn't the raw data, it's what happens to the data once it's yours. A phone app gives you last night in isolation. This system gives you that same night alongside six months of context. It knows your deep sleep has been declining since you increased training volume. It knows your SpO2 dips below 94% roughly twice a week and the frequency has been climbing since September. It knows you sleep 40 minutes more on nights following rest days. These patterns only emerge from longitudinal data in a queryable database, not from a daily snapshot on a phone screen. The agent runs scheduled checks and delivers results to whatever messaging channel you use. A morning summary with last night's breakdown. A weekly report with trends and flags. An alert when overnight SpO2 drops below a threshold you set. You can also just ask: "how's my deep sleep this month?" or "compare my sleep on training days vs rest days." The data is yours, on your hardware, queryable however you want, with no vendor deciding what questions you're allowed to ask. You could build this differently: Python instead of Node, Postgres instead of SQLite, a REST API instead of a CLI. What follows is one approach that works, based on a system that's been running against real nightly sleep data.

Morning Briefings, Trend Reports, and On-Demand Queries
You wear your watch to bed. That's the only active thing you do. Everything else is automatic. Your wearable records sleep data overnight: when you fell asleep, when you woke up, how long you spent in each stage, plus continuous heart rate, HRV, and blood oxygen readings. That data syncs to your phone's health store in the morning. An export app on your phone pushes it to a server running on your hardware, a Mac Mini in your Bangkok apartment, a Raspberry Pi in a closet, a NUC, whatever you have. No manual transfer, no cloud service in between, no app you need to remember to open. In the morning, OpenClaw's scheduled check fires around your usual wake time and sends a summary to your Telegram, Signal, or Discord: total sleep time, stage breakdown, efficiency, how your deep sleep compared to your recent average, any flags worth knowing about. If something was off, notably low deep sleep, SpO2 dipping below your threshold, a bedtime two hours later than your norm, it says so. If everything was normal, the summary is short. Once a week, a trend report arrives. Total sleep, deep sleep, and bedtime consistency over the last seven days compared to the previous seven. Whether your sleep debt is growing or shrinking. Patterns that don't show up in any single night but become clear over a week or two. Beyond the scheduled reports, you can ask anything. "How did I sleep last Tuesday?" "What's my average deep sleep this month?" "Show me nights where my SpO2 dropped below 93%." "How does my sleep compare on days I run vs days I don't?" The agent queries your database and responds in plain language. These aren't canned reports with predetermined metrics. You're querying your own data, and the agent figures out the right subcommand to run. If you want to adjust a threshold, say your doctor suggests flagging any night with less than 60 minutes of deep sleep, you tell the agent. It updates the configuration and uses the new number from that point on.

System Architecture: SQLite, CLI, and OpenClaw Plugin
The stack here is Node.js, SQLite, and a CLI that the AI agent calls as a tool. The same ideas apply if you prefer Python and Postgres, or Go and DuckDB. The parts that matter are the data pipeline from wearable to database, the session assembly logic, and the separation between deterministic analysis and AI presentation. Data Pipeline Sleep data follows the same path as other wearable health metrics: wearable records, phone health store, export app, HTTP POST, local server, SQLite. On iOS, HealthKit is the aggregation point. Apple Watch, Oura, Garmin, and most other wearables write to HealthKit. An export app (Health Auto Export is one popular option, though you could write a Shortcut that does the same thing) pushes new samples to a URL on your local server. On Android, Health Connect serves the same role, bridged via Gadgetbridge (open-source) or a custom exporter. The local server runs behind a tunnel (Cloudflare Tunnel, Tailscale Funnel, or ngrok) so your phone can reach it from outside your network. The server validates each incoming request: shared secret in the header, expected JSON schema, reasonable payload size. Requests that fail any check get rejected. This endpoint is the only thing exposed to the network, and it only accepts health data payloads, a narrow surface. If you use Tailscale, the phone and server communicate over an encrypted mesh with no public endpoint at all. The data arrives as timestamped samples: sleep analysis events (each tagged with a stage type), heart rate readings at regular intervals, HRV measurements, and SpO2 values. Each sample includes a timestamp, a numeric value, and a source device identifier. The server writes them to SQLite in a single transaction per payload. Health data typically syncs a few times a day, not in real time. Last night's sleep might arrive in one or two batches after you wake up and your phone syncs. The pipeline handles this without issue: duplicate samples are rejected by unique constraints, and late-arriving data folds into the correct nightly session on the next assembly pass. Sleep Session Assembly Raw samples don't arrive as neat sessions. You get individual sleep analysis events (deep, REM, light, awake, in-bed), scattered heart rate readings, and periodic SpO2 measurements. The system assembles these into a single nightly session. This is where most of the engineering complexity lives. The assembly logic groups sleep analysis samples by night, accounting for the midnight boundary, since a session that starts at 23:30 and ends at 06:45 is one night, not two. It calculates totals per stage, derives sleep efficiency (time asleep divided by time in bed), computes sleep onset latency (how long from getting in bed to the first sleep stage), and associates overnight heart rate, HRV, and SpO2 readings with the correct session. Edge cases matter more here than in most health data systems. Multiple sleep segments in one night when you wake up for an hour at 3 AM and go back to sleep. Naps at 15:00 that shouldn't merge into the previous night's session. Nights where the watch was removed partway through, leaving partial data that's still better than nothing but needs a quality flag. Time zone shifts if you travel. Wearables that report "in bed" but not distinct sleep stages (older devices, or nights where the sensor couldn't classify). All of this is deterministic code. Stage durations are sums. Efficiency is a division. Session boundaries are timestamp comparisons. A sleep session with 47 minutes of deep sleep reports 47, no model involved. This matters because every downstream analysis (trends, flags, correlations) depends on the assembly being correct. If the assembly logic is probabilistic, everything built on top of it inherits that uncertainty. Storage SQLite via better-sqlite3 (Node.js) or stdlib sqlite3 (Python). The choice of SQLite keeps things simple: no server process, single file on disk, easy to back up, easy to query. The important thing is having your data in a real database with indexes, constraints, and transactions so you can add new queries without redesigning the storage layer. The health_metrics table stores one row per sample, with fields for metric (canonical name such as sleep_analysis, heart_rate, hrv, or spo2), value (numeric), unit, timestamp (ISO 8601), and source (device identifier). It is indexed on metric and timestamp, with a unique constraint on metric, timestamp, and source to reject duplicate imports. On top of raw samples, the system maintains nightly sleep summaries. You could compute these on the fly from the raw data each time, but a materialized summary table is faster to query and makes the CLI subcommands simpler. The sleep_sessions table stores one row per night, with fields for date (the calendar date this night belongs to, so a session ending at 06:00 on March 15 is the March 14 night), bedtime, wake_time, total_sleep_min, time_in_bed_min, efficiency (percent), onset_latency_min, deep_min, rem_min, light_min, awake_min, avg_hr (average heart rate during sleep), min_hr, avg_hrv, avg_spo2, min_spo2, source, and flags (a JSON array of anything notable about the night). It has a unique constraint on date and indexes on date, efficiency, and deep_min for the queries you'll run most often. WAL mode for concurrent reads. Foreign keys enforced. The database file sits on your local disk, not accessible over the network. Access control is filesystem permissions. If disk encryption is enabled (FileVault on macOS, LUKS on Linux), the data is encrypted at rest automatically. No database server to misconfigure or expose. Analysis and CLI Surface Every operation is a CLI subcommand that returns structured JSON. OpenClaw's agent renders natural language from the structured output. The CLI never produces conversational text. This separation is worth maintaining: JSON output makes every subcommand testable (pipe to jq, assert on fields), composable (chain in scripts), and straightforward to wrap as an OpenClaw plugin. If you later want a web dashboard or a different agent, the CLI works unchanged. Subcommands include: Each subcommand includes a next_step field in its output suggesting relevant follow-ups. After sleep-flags returns a list of poor nights, the output might suggest sleep-correlate to investigate causes. This means the agent doesn't need to memorize analysis workflows; each step's output carries the thread forward. Scheduling and Alerts OpenClaw's cron system runs the scheduled checks. The CLI returns JSON; OpenClaw's messaging layer handles delivery. The sleep tool doesn't know about Telegram, Signal, or any specific channel. Three jobs cover most needs: A morning report fires shortly after your typical wake time. It calls sleep for last night and presents the summary. If you also track exercise, it can include context from the previous day ("you ran 8k yesterday evening") alongside the sleep data. This is the job most people want first. A weekly trend summary runs once a week. It calls sleep-trend for the past seven days, compares to the prior seven, and highlights what changed. Is bedtime consistency getting better? Deep sleep declining? SpO2 flags becoming more frequent? Weekly cadence catches patterns that daily reports miss because no single night looks alarming on its own. A flag alert runs daily and calls sleep-flags for the previous night. If nothing is flagged, it stays silent, you only hear from it when something crosses a threshold. This is separate from the morning report: the morning report always fires; the flag alert only fires when there's a reason. The CLI handles the analysis. OpenClaw handles when it runs and where the output goes. If you switch messaging apps, zero code changes in the sleep tool. If you want to add a monthly deep-dive, that's a new cron entry, not new analysis code. Integration Points Sleep data becomes substantially more useful when it's connected to everything else you track. Because all tools run as registered capabilities inside the same OpenClaw instance, the agent queries across domains in a single conversation turn without custom integration code. Exercise and recovery: if workouts flow through the same health data pipeline, the system can compare sleep metrics on training days vs rest days, after high-intensity sessions vs easy ones, or on days with late-evening exercise vs morning exercise. You might discover that runs above a certain distance push your resting heart rate higher during the first half of the night. That's not visible in either your workout app or your sleep app individually; it only shows up when both datasets live in the same database. Fasting and meal timing: if you track eating windows (intermittent fasting, time-restricted eating), the relationship between your last meal and sleep quality is measurable. Some people find that eating within two hours of bedtime degrades sleep efficiency. Others don't notice a difference. Your data answers it for your specific physiology rather than deferring to generic advice. Medication and supplement timing: magnesium, melatonin, caffeine, sleep aids all have time-dependent effects on sleep. If medications and supplements are logged through the same system, temporal patterns surface naturally. Three weeks after starting magnesium glycinate, has deep sleep changed? The medication tool and sleep tool share the same database by default when both run inside OpenClaw. Bloodwork: certain biomarkers relate to sleep quality: thyroid function, testosterone, cortisol, iron status, vitamin D. When bloodwork and sleep data live in the same system, the agent can note connections. Testosterone was low on the draw where you'd been averaging under six hours for three weeks. Not a causal claim, but a data point worth mentioning to your doctor. Platform Considerations The data pipeline depends on your wearable and phone ecosystem. On iOS with an Apple Watch, HealthKit is the aggregation layer. Apple Watch has reported sleep stages (deep, REM, core) since watchOS 9. Third-party wearables like Oura and Garmin also write to HealthKit, so the data path works regardless of which device you wear. Health Auto Export or a similar app pushes it all to your server. On Android, Health Connect serves the same aggregation role. Gadgetbridge is an open-source option for bridging many wearable brands. The server endpoint doesn't care which platform sends the data; it accepts JSON payloads matching the expected schema. Some wearables offer direct cloud APIs (Oura Cloud API, Garmin Connect API, Whoop API). You could poll these instead of routing through the phone's health store. The tradeoff: direct APIs sometimes provide richer device-specific data (Oura's readiness scores, Garmin's Body Battery), but you're pulling from a cloud service rather than keeping the pipeline fully local. Depending on your privacy priorities, this may or may not matter. OpenClaw runs on macOS, Linux, or any system with Node.js. The server and CLI run on your hardware. The phone pushes data; OpenClaw orchestrates everything else.
- sleep: nightly summary for a date or date range. Stage breakdown, duration, efficiency, overnight vitals. Defaults to last night. A date range returns an array.
- sleep-trend: aggregated trends over a configurable window. Average total sleep, deep sleep, efficiency, and bedtime consistency (standard deviation of bedtime over the window). Returns current period alongside the previous period for comparison. Trend direction is a simple numeric comparison, not an LLM judgment.
- sleep-flags: nights meeting flag criteria within a window: deep sleep below threshold, SpO2 below threshold, efficiency below a percentage, total sleep below a minimum, bedtime deviating beyond a set tolerance. Returns each flagged night with the specific reason. This is the most useful subcommand for automated checks.
- spo2-sleep: overnight SpO2 analysis. Filters SpO2 readings to the sleep window, computes average, minimum, and time below a configurable threshold (default 90%, adjustable). Useful for identifying patterns in overnight oxygen desaturation, not a medical diagnosis, but a concrete signal worth raising with a doctor if it recurs.
- sleep-debt: cumulative deficit over a rolling window. Compares actual sleep to a target (such as 7.5 hours per night) and tracks the running shortfall or surplus. Sleep debt doesn't work like a bank account, you can't repay a week of five-hour nights with one long sleep, but tracking the cumulative gap is still useful for understanding your recovery posture.
- sleep-compare: compare two date ranges side by side. Average metrics with deltas. "Compare this month to last month" or "weekday sleep vs weekend sleep."
- sleep-correlate: cross-metric analysis. Correlates sleep quality with workout data, fasting schedule, or other tracked metrics. Returns correlation coefficients computed deterministically (Pearson or Spearman on paired data). The agent presents the numbers conversationally.
building
Building the System: Session Assembly, CLI, and Cron Integration
How a Coding Agent Builds This A coding agent (Claude Code, Codex, or whatever you prefer) builds the system through iterative prompting. Here's a sequence that works well for sleep tracking specifically. The order matters more than usual because the data pipeline and session assembly need to be solid before any analysis makes sense. Best Practices The practice that matters most for this system, in our experience, is getting session assembly right and keeping it right through changes. Assembly is where edge cases concentrate and where regressions cause the most damage. Every downstream query trusts the session summaries. If assembly miscounts deep sleep minutes because it mishandles a midnight boundary, your trends, flags, and correlations all inherit the error silently. Heavy test coverage on assembly is not optional. When the coding agent refactors boundary handling or adds nap filtering six weeks later, the test suite catches breakage before you find out from a wrong morning report. Deterministic logic for all analysis. Sleep efficiency is a division. Stage totals are sums. Trend direction is a numeric comparison. SpO2 flags are threshold checks. None of this should touch a language model. The agent's role is presenting results in natural language and interpreting follow-up questions. If you're asking the model "was this a good night of sleep?", the scoring logic belongs in the CLI. Structured data in SQLite, not flat files. Sleep data accumulates every night. Within a year you have 365 sessions, each with stage breakdowns, vital sign summaries, and flags. Querying "show me all nights where deep sleep was under 45 minutes and I ran more than 5k that day" is one SQL join across two tables. In a folder of JSON files, it's a script you'd write once, use once, and lose. CLI-first with JSON output. Every subcommand returns structured data that the morning cron, the conversational agent, and any future interface all consume identically. The CLI is the single source of truth for sleep analysis. - HTTP endpoint and storage: scaffold a lightweight HTTP server (Express, Fastify, or Node's built-in http) that accepts POST requests with health data payloads. Schema validation, shared secret check, write to SQLite with duplicate rejection via unique constraints. Test with real exports from your phone, not synthetic data. Real health data has quirks, out-of-order timestamps, duplicate samples from multiple sync passes, minor unit inconsistencies, that synthetic payloads won't reveal. Initialize a git repo before writing the first line of code. You'll want the history when a refactor breaks something later.
- Sleep session assembly: the hardest part of the entire build and the place where the coding agent needs the tightest feedback loop. Group raw samples by night, handle midnight boundaries, merge interrupted segments, filter naps, compute summary metrics. Write this incrementally and test each piece before stacking the next. A bug in assembly propagates into every trend, every flag, every correlation downstream. When in doubt, log the intermediate state so you can inspect how samples are being grouped.
- Tests for assembly: write these alongside the assembly code, not after everything "works." Use real edge cases: a night split across midnight, a 90-minute mid-night wake, a night where the watch came off at 2 AM, a 15:00 nap that must not merge with last night, a cross-timezone flight. Session assembly has more edge cases than most parts of a health system because human sleep is messy and irregular. The test suite is the only thing preventing regressions when the coding agent later decides to clean up the assembly logic.
- Basic CLI subcommands: start with sleep (nightly summary) and sleep-trend (weekly averages). Structured JSON output for both. Once these work, you can query last night or the past week conversationally through the agent. Don't design all the subcommands upfront. Use these two against real data for a few days and you'll learn what you actually want to ask.
- Flags and SpO2 analysis: add sleep-flags and spo2-sleep. These are the most valuable automated surfaces because they catch things you'd otherwise miss entirely. A single night of 90% efficiency doesn't alarm you. Three weeks of declining efficiency is worth knowing about, and sleep-flags with a rolling window catches it. SpO2 analysis is numerically simple (filter to sleep window, compute min and time-below-threshold) but worth careful implementation because the results can trigger medical conversations.
- OpenClaw plugin: wrap the CLI in a typed plugin with parameter schemas, validated enums, and clear descriptions for each tool. The plugin is a thin wrapper: map parameters to CLI arguments, invoke the CLI, return stdout. Keep analysis logic out of the plugin. One thing worth adding at the plugin layer: a formatting gate for the morning report, so the agent acknowledges presentation instructions before rendering the data. This prevents the agent from reverting to generic bullet lists when a more specific format is appropriate.
- Cron jobs: configure the morning report, weekly summary, and flag alert in OpenClaw's cron. Start with one job and verify the full path end to end: cron triggers, CLI runs, JSON comes back, message reaches your channel. Then add the rest. Debugging a cron job that runs at 07:00 is annoying; get it right with one before adding three.
- Correlation and comparison subcommands: sleep-compare and sleep-correlate come last because they need enough accumulated data to be meaningful. A week of sleep data is fine for basic summaries. Meaningful correlations between sleep quality and training load need at least a month, preferably two or three. Build these subcommands when you have the data to exercise them. This is where the system starts producing insights you genuinely couldn't get from a phone app.

Models
Most of this system is deterministic code. Session assembly, stage calculations, trend detection, flag generation, SpO2 analysis, correlation math, and sleep debt tracking are all operations on numbers in a database. None of them benefit from a language model. The model handles the conversational layer: interpreting questions ("how'd I sleep this week?" maps to sleep-trend with a 7-day window), rendering JSON responses in natural language, and weaving context from multiple tools into a coherent answer (mentioning yesterday's workout alongside last night's sleep data). For weekly summaries, the model may also generate a brief narrative from the structured trend data, a light summarization task that makes the report more readable than raw numbers. If you wanted to extend the system to accept subjective sleep notes via text message ("took melatonin at 22:00, couldn't fall asleep until midnight"), the model would handle parsing those into structured entries. Most sleep systems don't need this since the wearable captures the data passively, but it's there if you add a journaling layer. Security: Keeping Sleep Data Private on Local Hardware
The attack surface for a sleep tracking system is smaller than for systems that ingest email or process documents from external sources. Your data comes from one place: your own phone, pushing to your own server. The HTTP endpoint is the main surface. It accepts health data payloads from your phone and needs: a shared secret in the request header (reject anything without it), HTTPS via the tunnel provider (handled automatically by Cloudflare Tunnel and Tailscale Funnel), and schema validation (reject payloads that don't match the expected health data format). Rate limiting is sensible but less critical than for a public API, your phone sends a handful of requests per day. If you use Tailscale, the phone and server talk over an encrypted mesh with no public endpoint, which is the lowest-exposure configuration. No email ingestion means the system doesn't read content from external senders. There's no prompt injection surface from strangers. The data pipeline is closed: your wearable to your phone to your server. Local data protection follows the same pattern as any private system. Disk encryption handles data at rest. Filesystem permissions control who reads the SQLite file. Backups pushed offsite should go to a private repository or be encrypted before upload. Sleep data is moderately sensitive in aggregate, patterns reveal your schedule, your presence at home, and potentially health conditions like sleep-disordered breathing, but the risk profile is lower than for financial records or detailed medical data. Overall: this is a low-risk system. One authenticated endpoint, data from a device you control, no external content entering the agent's context. Standard machine hygiene covers the rest. From there, sleep-trend and sleep-flags give you the analysis layer. Wrap the CLI in an OpenClaw plugin for conversational access, set up the morning report cron, and you have a working sleep tracker that tells you what matters before you think to ask. SpO2 analysis, sleep debt tracking, correlation subcommands, and cross-metric integration are refinements you add after the core loop is running and you have a few weeks of data to work with. Don't wait until the full system is designed before syncing your first night. The value starts with having the raw data on your own hardware.

Sleep data sits on your phone in a consumer app that shows one night at a time. You glance at it in the morning, maybe, and forget it by noon. The patterns that actually matter, the ones that affect your training, your recovery, your bloodwork, your energy, are invisible at that resolution. These scenarios show what changes when the data lives in a real system. You wake up groggy and check your morning report: 38 minutes of deep sleep, about half your recent average of 72 minutes. The agent notes you ran 10k at 20:00 the night before, and your resting heart rate didn't settle to its usual range until well past midnight. One night doesn't mean much. But after three weeks, the pattern is clear: evening runs above 7k consistently eat into deep sleep. Morning runs don't show the same effect. You move your long runs earlier in the day. Most practitioners who care about their clients' sleep are working from questionnaires and subjective reports. Continuous wearable data exists for millions of people. It's just trapped in consumer apps with no professional workflow built around it. A sleep medicine practice in Bangkok follows up with patients between visits using a standardized questionnaire. Compliance is low, and the data that comes back is subjective. With this system, patients' wearable data flows to the practice's own infrastructure, on their hardware, under their control.
